What is Covered: Eye Examinations
One complete exam, one partial exam and one diagnostic procedure per benefit year for children less than 19 years of age and seniors age 65 and over;
additional benefits apply for these age groups for some medical conditions.

Alberta residents beween the ages of 19 and 64, who require an eye examination for a medical condition, episode of illness or trauma, may be eligible for an eye examination if the optometrist deems it as an insured eye examination under provincial guidelines.
Medically required eye examinations are a benefit for all MSP beneficiaries when there is a medical necessity. Routine eye examinations are a benefit only for those 18 years of age and under and 65 years of age and over.
One complete routine eye exam every two years for those under 19 years of age or 65 and over. Exams for all ages are covered if deemed medically necessary by physician or optometrist.

  • Extended Health Benefits (EHB) for Seniors
  • Non-insured Health Benefits (NIHB) (Health Canada)
  • Metis Health Benefits (MHB)
One complete routine examination every two years for persons under age ten or over age 65.
Services provided by opthalmologist
One routine eye examination per year for persons under age 20 and those 65 and over. OHIP also covers a major eye exam once every 12 months for persons aged 20-64 who have medical conditions requiring regular eye examinations.
Coverage up to 18 years
One complete eye examination per year for persons under the age of 18 and persons age 65 or over;
persons age 18 to 64 who are hospitalized to receive long-term care or persons accommodated in a long-term care facility (the hospital or facility pays the cost of the optometric services);
or visually impaired persons of any age who are registered with any of the accredited centres specializing in rehabilitation of the visually impaired.
For those in receipt of benefits under the Supplementary Health Program or Family Health Benefits, one routine eye exam per 24-month period for those between ages 18 and 64, one routine eye exam per 12-month period for those under age 18 or over 65. Partial eye exams are covered for these specifications except when optometrist provides the service within 90 days of a routine eye exam. Glaucoma testing is also covered for those over 40 years old when provided during a routine eye exam.
