What is Covered: Eye Examinations

Coverage for children under 19 years of age or age 65 and over for:

  • One complete exam
  • One partial exam and one diagnostic procedure per benefit year

  • Medically required eye examinations
  • Routine eye examinations for children under 19 years of age or age 65 and over

Coverage for children under 19 years of age or age 65 and over:

  • One complete routine eye exam every two years
  • Exams for all ages will be covered if deemed medically necessary by a physician or optometrist

Some residents may have health coverage through:

  • Extended Health Benefits (EHB) for Seniors
  • Non-insured Health Benefits (NIHB) (Health Canada)
  • Metis Health Benefits (MHB)

Coverage for children up to their 10th birthday, or age 65 and over:

  • Routine vision analysis once every two years

Services provided by opthalmologist

Coverage for persons under 20 and age 65 and over: one eye exam once a year;
One major eye exam every 12 months for persons aged 20 - 64 who have medical conditions requiring regular eye examinations.

Not covered

Coverage for Persons under the age of 18 and age 65 and over:

  • One complete eye examination and one extensive colour vision test per year
  • Employment assistance recipients age 18 to 64 are entitled to receive these services once every two years.

Coverage for those under 18 years of age or in receipt of a Saskatchewan Income Plan supplement or receive benefits under the Supplementary Health Program or Family Health Benefits:

  • Routine eye examinations (limited to one per 24-month period if between 18 and 64 years or one per 12-month period if any other age)
  • Partial eye examinations (except when optometrist provides service within 90 days of a routine eye examination)
