How Long Coverage Continues: Short Absences
Absence within Canada - coverage is maintained for 12 months. Coverage is maintained during an absence of up to 182 days in any 12 month period if Alberta remains the permanent and principal home. May apply for extensions of coverage up to 48 months if absence due to work, business or missionary services, or up to 24 months if absence due to travel or educational leave (sabbatical) or the period a full-time student at an accredited educational institute.
Coverage is maintained during an absence of up to 182 days in any 12 month period if BC remains the permanent and principal home. Coverage may be continued up to 24 months; approval limited to once in 5 years for absences that exceed 6 months in a calendar year. Coverage may be continued for duration of studies, if in full-time attendance at a recognized educational facility and enrolled in program which leads to a degree or certificate recognized in Canada.
Coverage is maintained during an absence of up to 182 days in any 12 month period if Manitoba remains the permanent and principal home. Coverage may be extended for 24 months for work absences. Coverage may be maintained for duration of absence for full-time students in an accredited educational institute.
Coverage is maintained during an absence of up to 182 days in any 12 month period if NB remains the permanent and principal home. Coverage may be extended for an additional 12 months, limited to once every 3 years. Coverage may be extended for up to 2 years for out-of-country work contracts, Coverage may be extended for absences if full-time student at a recognized educational institute.
Coverage is maintained during an absence of up to 8 months in any 12 month period if Newfoundland remains the permanent and principal home. Coverage may be extended for 12 months for vacation (initial extension) and 8 months in each following year. Coverage may be extended for 12 months for work absence or up to 3 years. Coverage is maintained during an absence of up to 182 days in any 12 month period if NWT remains the permanent and principal home. Coverage may be extended for absences due to medical, work or school. Contact NWT Health if longer than 3 months.
